Drug Testing Q & A

What is drug testing?

Drug testing is a screening that looks for signs of prescription or illegal drugs. Drug tests use a small sample of your blood, urine, saliva, or hair. Thanks to advancements in medical technology, drug testing is more powerful than ever before and can detect even trace amounts of various substances.

A number of different factors affect how drug testing works. Some of those factors include:

  • The volume of drug used
  • The type of drug used
  • The way your body reacts to a specific drug
  • The length of time you used the drug prior to being tested

Some of the drugs commonly tested for include:

  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • Amphetamines
  • Barbiturates
  • Steroids
  • Opioids and opiates
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Phencyclidine

When is drug testing required?

Many people need to come in for professional drug testing at one point or another. A number of organizations and employers require these screenings.

Some of the circumstances that can lead to the need for drug testing include:

  • To meet employment requirements
  • Following a workplace accident
  • To meet legal evidence requirements
  • As part of drug treatment
  • As proof that collegiate or professional athletes are not using banned substances
  • To monitor for misuse of prescription medications

If you learn you need drug testing, Galenus Group offers prompt, accurate services to help you meet any of these requirements.

How is drug testing performed?

With all forms of drug testing, it’s important to provide a full list of all medications and supplements you’re taking. Even over-the-counter medications can show up on the results. Some foods can even cause you to erroneously test positive — for example, consuming poppy seeds before a test can cause you to test positive for opiates.

If your drug screening requires a urine sample, you simply come in and provide a small sample of urine, similar to what happens during routine annual physical exams. If your screening requires a blood draw, the entire process takes just a few minutes, and you shouldn’t have any discomfort other than a slight sting as the needle enters your skin.

Galenus Group practitioners understand the importance of getting the results of drug testing as soon as possible. Your sample goes to the lab promptly, and results are issued as quickly as possible.
