Diabetes Evaluation and Management Q & A

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when you have too much glucose, also called sugar, in your blood.

Glucose comes from the food you eat and serves as the main source of energy for every cell in your body. Insulin, a hormone made in the pancreas, moves glucose from your bloodstream into your cells.

If you have diabetes, you either don’t make any insulin or your cells are no longer responding to the actions of the insulin, leading to a rise in blood glucose levels. Too much glucose in the blood damages blood vessels and organs, causing complications like neuropathy and kidney disease.

Diabetes is common, and many people don’t know they have it. The team at Galenus Group is committed to keeping you healthy and offers comprehensive diabetes evaluations and management plans.

What happens during a diabetes evaluation?

You can expect attentive and personalized care during your diabetes evaluation at Galenus Group. Your provider asks detailed questions about your health concerns, medical history, and family history.

They perform a physical examination and run lab work to check your blood glucose levels. Galenus Group offers onsite blood draws and lab services, so you don’t have to go to another clinic to complete your evaluation.

Diabetes testing may include fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and hemoglobin A1C (A1C)

FPG

FPG checks your blood glucose level at that moment in time. To get reliable results, you need to stop eating and drinking at least eight hours before the blood draw.

A1C

The A1C test gives your average blood glucose over a three-month period.

Your provider at Galenus Group uses both tests to confirm or rule out diabetes.

What is diabetes management?

Diabetes management is the plan the team at Galenus Group develops to help you take control of your diabetes. The goal of diabetes management is to keep your blood glucose levels in a normal range and prevent diabetes-related complications.

Your diabetes management plan may include:

  • Nutrition therapy
  • An exercise program
  • At-home blood glucose testing
  • Prescription diabetes medication
  • Management of co-occurring conditions (high cholesterol and hypertension)

The team schedules regular follow-up visits to monitor your health and teaches you how to manage your diabetes at home.
